1. Give your Products Ample time to work

I put this as the first healthy skincare habit to imbibe in 2021 because we live in an era when skincare is a huge deal so there is always that skincare product you are eyeing and would love to incorporate into your skincare routine. So many of us are product junkies, me inclusive. But before you jump into getting the next product, have you given the ones you are using currently the time to work? Think about it.

You always want to use a product at least 4 -12 weeks before you can really be sure about that product. Many skincare products that contain skin actives could cause your skin to purge and some can be downright irritating. You can only tell the difference by giving it some time.

2. Avoid trying out several products at once

Another good skin care habit to start this year is to avoid using too many skincare products at once. Yes, you need several skincare ingredients in your skincare routine to help treat your skin issues but no you don’t need to use all these good skincare ingredients at once. For one, these skincare products are formulated at different ph, and using the wrong ones together can neutralize each other. On the other hand, if you are using too many products at once and you begin to see good results then it’s going to be really difficult to pinpoint which skincare products were responsible for that.

3. Remove your makeup every night

If you want to experience clear skin with fewer clogged pores and acne breakout then taking off your makeup every night is a must. I always recommend double cleansing at night. Double cleansing means using an oil cleanser first to remove waterproof makeup and then following up with a water-based cleanser to remove dirt and grime from the face. When you get into the habit of regularly taking off your makeup you will notice that you tend to form blackheads less frequently.

4. Use sunscreens daily

If you haven’t been using sunscreens in your skincare routine then this is the time to start. It may seem like an additional step in your skincare routine and you may be worried about those horrible sunscreens that leave a white cast on the face.

Yes, it is an additional step and a very important one that doesn’t need to be overlooked or skipped. Now there are so many lightweight sunscreens available right now that don’t leave you looking like you got the wrong foundation shade 🙂. The sun is the leading cause of premature aging of the skin. So you need a sunscreen that is broad-spectrum meaning it protects from both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and cause collagen disruption and wrinkle formation while UVB rays cause superficial changes like sunburns.

You also need sunscreens with SPF 30 at least. Irrespective of the weather forecast for the day you should always use sunscreen daily.

5. Use antioxidants daily

This is another healthy skincare habit to start in 2021. Antioxidants are very beneficial in skincare. They protect the skin from oxidative stress that can arise from free radicals, UV rays, and environmental pollutants. These offenders cause issues like premature signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. Everyone needs antioxidants in their skincare regimen. Examples of antioxidants in skincare are vitamin C, E, niacinamide, ferulic acid, and green tea just to mention a few.

6. Clean your phone screens

Do u wonder why irrespective of how well u care for your skin you still seem to breakout around certain areas of your face?  Not cleaning your phone regularly could be one of the causes. Our phones harbor a lot of dirt and bacteria and when this is transferred to the skin, it can clog the pores and lead to inflammation which is not what we want. So clean your phone screens as often as possible.

7. Avoid touching your face

This is another reason you could be breaking out. Especially around your jawline where you tend to always rest your hands. Our hands are always in contact with various surfaces and like phones can also transfer dirt and bacteria unto the skin and start a process that eventually leads to a breakout. So ensure you minimize touching your face and also wash your hands regularly.

8. Moisturize morning and night

Moisturizing your skin provides the skin with the hydration it needs to keep it supple and keep your oil glands in check. It is common practice to skip applying a moisturizer when you have excessive oily production as is the case for those with oily acne-prone skin. But when we fail to do this, the body sends signals to the sebaceous glands to produce more oils to attempt to hydrate your skin.

No matter what skin type or skin concerns you have, there is a moisturizer suited for your skin type. For those with oily skin, look out for a lightweight, gel moisturizer that will moisturize your skin without clogging your pores. while those who have dry skin should gravitate towards creamy and richer moisturizers that are packed with hydrating skincare ingredients.

9. Get enough rest

The next skincare habit is to get enough rest. This is very important. With everyone chasing one dream or goal, rest has become the opportunity cost for most of us. But this can have really bad effects on our overall health and skin. Our skin regenerates while we sleep so cutting back on your sleeping time will eventually catch up on your skin health. We need about 8-9 hours of rest per day to enable us not only to have great skin but to also stay sound and more productive.

10.Eat Healthy meals

Just like getting enough rest, the importance of eating healthy meals can not be overemphasized. You want to eat foods rich in essential vitamins and minerals. You want to eat a lot of fish, fruits, and vegetables and avoid foods high in sugar and saturated fats. We also need a healthy dose of water every day as well to keep our skin glowing so drink up as much as you can, a minimum of 3L per day.

I hope you found the post helpful, and I will see you on the next one.
